Naming and keeping things congruent

One thing I have trouble with, even after I have developed my main plot, setup the visual flow of the story and begun creating the delicate bits that connect all the events and characters in an organic way, is naming.

Naming is something that can make an epic dialogue between two character and make it sound completely silly.

Being able to name your characters with believable sounding names can be extremely difficult. If you use names too dull it can water down your characters presence, and keep them from being memerable. On the other hand, if you use names far too high fantasy or exotic, it can make your events seem silly.

I typically start a list of names for characters, places, even events some times. I will make around 200 entries to begin, and expand after that if necessary.

This allows me not only get the creative juices flowing, but also helps break any writing blocks that may be plaguing me that day.

Inspiration by any other name...

In preparing for each session of writing, I try to find an image or a song that inspires me. Inspiration, though necessary for me, doesn't always fall in the category I need it to. Some times I find I have been inspired to develop a characters arch, but to my disappointing, the character I want to write about has already be written for.

This ultimately means I either write what I have inspiration for at the moment and see if a re-write is a good move, waste time trying to write about something I have no urge to write for at the moment, or waste time trying to psyche myself up for the section I really need to work on.

Ultimately, I usually end up with 5 or 6 arcs for each character, protagonist or not. I feel this gives me a great  amount of "wiggle" room when it comes to rounding my characters and organically incorporating them.

Writing ridiculous, cliche, or just plain unusable material is just necessary sometimes. I need to get that material out of my head before I can come up with decent material. It makes me laugh when I think about some of the utterly useless bits I have written.

I am happy with how this new book is coming along. I'll be working on it for a long time, but I feel like it will be an end that is definitely justified by the means.

Agents and Publishers

I have a few agents already interested in my manuscript as it stands now. I'll have to update some things, and rebuild some parts of the story, but it is looking up.

Conceptions of a storyline

I'd like to start by saying "Hello".

My name is Will, and I will be updating this blog Mondays, Wed, and Fridays by 3PM EST.
To begin:

I am beginning the work on a fantasy book. I will be looking for backers via Kickstarter and donations. The Kickstarter page will be up in about a week from today's date. Occasionally, I will be posting questions or asking for recommendations from you the readers.

These may be in regards to comments on portions of the story from my book I reveal or "test". These may also be general questions or comments just to get the daily creative juices flowing. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I will, and I know this is going to be fun and frustrating at the same time.

Have a great day all!
